Nonsurgical Treatments for Hand, Wrist, & Elbow

Nonsurgical treatments for the hand, wrist, and elbow can include one or more combinations of the following interventions.

Splinting

Splints is a medical brace that may be recommended to support and stabilize the affected area, ease pressure, and reduce symptoms like pain, tingling, and numbness.

Medications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, and others) can help relieve pain and inflammation.

Physical Therapies

Physical therapy is often prescribed to strengthen muscles, improve range of motion, and enhance flexibility in your hand and wrist.

Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroid injections, administered directly into the affected area, can temporarily relieve pain and inflammation in conditions like tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, or arthritis.

Shots

Different types of shots are injected into the affected area to treat conditions affecting the hand, wrist, and elbow. Injection shots mainly consist of corticosteroid medication, which will relieve pain and inflammation.

Bracing

Bracing uses a supportive device called a brace to support and stabilize the affected area. It is often used for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, sprains, or tendonitis, with treatment durations typically ranging from 6 to 12 weeks.

Needle Fenestration

Needle fenestration guides a small needle into the injured tendon repeatedly to puncture and release the tight bands of tissue to increase blood flow and promote healing. This procedure is typically performed under anesthesia and uses ultrasound technology to visualize the area being treated.

Ultrasonic Tenotomy

Ultrasonic tenotomy uses ultrasound to guide a needle into the damaged tendon. It utilizes ultrasonic energy to precisely and selectively remove damaged or degenerated tissue from the affected tendon, promoting healing and relieving pain.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that uses your blood to promote healing and tissue repair. Platelets are separated from your blood and then injected back into the injured tendons to promote healing.

What To Expect During Nonsurgical Treatment

During nonsurgical treatment, you can expect a comprehensive approach to reduce pain and improve the function of the hand, wrist, and elbow.

Initial Evaluation

We begin with a thorough evaluation of your medical history review and physical examination. Diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound, may be ordered to help diagnose the condition accurately and determine the most appropriate treatment approach.

Discuss Treatment Options

Once the diagnosis is established, we will discuss the nonsurgical treatment options that are appropriate for your situation. This may include a combination of therapies tailored to treat your condition. We will also explain each treatment option, its benefits, and expected outcomes in detail to help you make an informed decision.

Treatment

Your treatment may involve attending physical therapy sessions, taking medications as directed, wearing splints or braces, performing home exercises, or receiving injections as needed.

Monitoring Progress

Our team will closely monitor your progress with the treatment. This may involve regular follow-up appointments, functional improvement, and any changes in symptoms. Adjustments to the treatment plan may be made based on your response to the treatment and overall progress.
