Musculoskeletal Issues

Musculoskeletal issues include a broad range of conditions that affect various parts of your musculoskeletal system. These include conditions related to bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues. Common musculoskeletal issues include tendonitis, ligament sprain, and muscle strain.

The musculoskeletal system is the body's structural framework that helps you stand, sit, walk, run, and move. Various disorders and injuries can impact this system, leading to pain, limited mobility, and other symptoms.

At Kimball Health Services, we understand the significance of musculoskeletal health as a fundamental aspect of your overall well-being and mobility. We address various musculoskeletal issues and provide personalized treatments to address your specific condition and needs.

Musculoskeletal System

The musculoskeletal system is a complex network of tissues and structures within your body that provides form, support, and stability to your body. It enables various physical activities and movements.

The musculoskeletal system is made up of the following components.

Skeletal System

  • Bones serve as the framework of the body, providing support and protection for internal organs.
  • Joints are the points where two or more bones meet. They allow for movement and flexibility.

Muscular System

  • Muscles are the contractile tissues responsible for movement and help produce coordinated movements.
  • Tendons are tough connective tissues that attach muscles to bones and help in body movement.

Connective Tissues

  • Ligaments are fibrous tissues that connect bones to bones, providing stability to joints.
  • Cartilage is a flexible and resilient tissue that covers the ends of bones in joints, reducing friction and allowing for smooth movement.
  • Tendons connect muscles to bones, facilitating movement and stability.

The musculoskeletal system plays a crucial role in your day-to-day activities, ranging from simple tasks like walking to complex actions like playing sports.

Common musculoskeletal issues include conditions such as tendonitis, sprain, and muscle strains.

Back Issues

Experiencing back issues is a common occurrence that can happen at least once in your life, especially as your body ages. Around 8 out of 10 people in the US experience back pain, impacting daily activities and overall quality of life.

Back conditions, such as chronic back pain, herniated discs, or degenerative disc disease, can limit your mobility and hinder daily activities like walking or standing. Dealing with these back issues can be uncomfortable.

Lifestyle choices, injuries, medical conditions, and lumbar spine structure can all contribute to your back problems. Identifying these factors is crucial to prevent complications and find effective solutions.

Bursitis

Bursitis occurs when your bursae - the small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints - become inflamed. It is a painful condition and commonly affects the joints in your elbow, shoulder, knee, and hip.

Overuse or too much pressure on the joint can irritate and inflame the bursa. This can cause pain and affect your overall range of motion. At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic expert, Dr. MacMillan, provides both surgical as well as non-surgical treatment for bursitis.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis or tendinitis is a condition that occurs when you have inflammation in your tendons, the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone. This condition can cause acute pain and tenderness, making it difficult to move the affected joint and perform daily activities.

Tendonitis can be caused by sudden injuries and repetitive motion activities that contribute to bodily wear and tear. At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic expert, Dr. Macmillan, and skilled plastic & reconstructive and hand surgeon, Dr. Wyatt, provide both surgical and non-surgical treatment for tendonitis.

Joint Injuries & Joint Pain

Joint injuries and pain are common occurrences that can significantly impact your day-to-day life and activities. These conditions can cause discomfort, limit your range of motion, and, in severe cases, lead to substantial damage and long-term consequences.

Joint issues can result from various causes, including sudden injuries, repetitive stress injuries, or underlying health conditions. At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic team conducts thorough evaluations of your joint-related concerns to provide appropriate treatment tailored to your needs.

We address a wide range of conditions, from those that can be managed with non-surgical approaches to more severe cases that require surgical intervention.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a medical condition that weakens your bones, making them fragile and prone to fractures. This happens when there is a reduction in bone mineral density and mass, leading to changes in the structure and strength of bones. It results in bones becoming thinner, weaker, and more fragile than normal.

The development of osteoporosis is gradual and often goes unnoticed until you experience a fracture or break from a minor incident, such as a fall or bump.

Even activities as simple as coughing or sneezing can lead to fractures in osteoporotic bones. While osteoporosis can affect any bone, the hip, spine, and wrist are most commonly impacted.

Osteoporosis is a condition commonly experienced by older people and women after menopause. Early detection and management of osteoporosis are crucial to prevent fractures and maintain overall bone health.

At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic expert, Dr. MacMillan, offers personalized treatment options to help you strengthen and protect your bones.

Ligament Sprain

Ligament sprains occur when a ligament is stretched or torn, typically due to a sudden or forceful impact and a sudden change in direction. When a joint is forced into an unnatural position, it causes the ligament to be stretched beyond its normal limit, thus resulting in a sprain.

Repetitive motions and excessive strain can also cause strains.

Ligament sprains can be categorized into different grades based on the extent of damage that the ligament sustained. Grade 1 signifies a minimal tear with mild symptoms, while Grade 3 represents severe damage and a complete tear of the ligament.

The symptoms of a ligament sprain may include:

  • Pain around the affected joint
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Bruising
  • Joint instability
  • Limited range of motion

Ligament strains can be effectively managed through appropriate measures, such as proper rest, ice therapy, and compression. Physical therapy is often beneficial for enhancing stability and strength in the injured joint. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Tendon and Muscle Strain

Tendon and muscle strains are injuries that involve the overstretching or tearing of either tendons or muscles. Strains can occur from overuse, overexertion, and sudden and excessive impact on tendons and muscles.

A strain may manifest as a simple stretch of the muscle or tendon, or it can involve a partial or complete tear of the muscle and tendon.

Symptoms of strains include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Limited range of motion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Weakness in the affected muscle or joint

Treatment for Musculoskeletal Issues

The treatment for musculoskeletal issues depends on your specific condition, its severity, and your overall health. Common treatment options include physical and occupational therapy, proper rest, ice and compression therapy, and medications to manage pain and inflammation.

Surgical intervention might be necessary in severe cases. These may include procedures, such as bone fusion and tendon repair.

Bone Fusion Surgery (Arthrodesis)

Bone fusion, or arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure where two or more bones in a joint are permanently fused. It's recommended when conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, and joint injections fail to relieve chronic joint pain or dysfunction.

This procedure is commonly performed in various joints of the body, including the spine, ankle, knee, and wrist.

At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic team led by Dr. Jeffrey T. MacMillan performs arthrodesis as a treatment for conditions like joint fractures, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal issues affecting joint mobility.

During the procedure, the surgeon removes cartilage from the ends of the bones in the affected joint. After cartilage removal, the surgeon aligns the bones and uses surgical hardware like screws, plates, or rods to stabilize the joint, promoting the fusion of bone surfaces. Over time, the bones naturally fuse to become one.

Tendon Repair Surgery

Tendon repair is a surgical procedure performed to address injuries or tears in tendons. It can be performed on various tendons throughout the body, including those in the shoulder, elbow, hand, hip, knee, and ankle.

At Kimball Health Services, we perform tendon repair surgery to restore the damaged tendon and its function.

The procedure involves surgically rejoining the torn ends of the tendon. The surgeon carefully aligns the torn edges and may use sutures, anchors, or other devices to secure and reinforce the repaired tendon.
