Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that orthopedic surgeons use to diagnose and treat a variety of joint issues and conditions. This minor surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.

The procedure involves the use of a pencil-sized device called an arthroscope, which enables the surgeon to visualize the structures inside the joint.

Arthroscopy may be recommended for various conditions, including joint inflammation, injuries, or degenerative joint damage. While it can be performed on any joint, it is most commonly used for the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, and wrist. At Kimball Health Services, our orthopedic team uses arthroscopy to address various joint issues.

Understanding the Procedure

Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which an arthroscope is used to look inside your joint through a minimal incision.

An arthroscope is a small fiber-optic video camera attached to a narrow tube which is inserted into the joint through very small incisions. The arthroscope contains a small lens and lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint.

Light is transmitted through fiber optics to the end of the arthroscope inside the joint. The camera displays the image of the joint on a high-definition video monitor.

The view inside your joint allows the surgeon to examine the area and assess the extent and type of injury. Based on the diagnosis, the surgeon may perform various treatments to repair the joint.

Recovery Period

After the procedure, the patient is monitored for a few hours as the anesthesia wears off. Arthroscopy is usually a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. You are typically discharged the same day, and recovery is also faster compared to traditional surgery due to the small incisions and minimal tissue disruption.

While most people can return to light activities within a few days, full recovery varies depending on the specific procedure and the affected joint. The timeline for complete recovery can range from several weeks to several months.

Conditions Treated with Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy can be used for the diagnosis of various joint issues as well as treatment for specific conditions and injuries.

  • Diagnosis: Arthroscopy allows surgeons to see inside a joint without major incisions, providing a clear view of internal structures. This helps in accurately diagnosing various joint problems.
  • Treatment: Arthroscopy is also used to treat a wide range of joint, tendon, and ligament issues. Surgeons can access and repair damaged tissues through the small incisions made during the procedure.

Common conditions that are diagnosed and treated with arthroscopy include:

  • Joint pain and instability
  • Torn ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, including ACL and meniscus tears, and rotator cuff tears
  • Arthritis in various joints like the knee, ankle, wrists, and foot
  • Shoulder issues, such as dislocations, frozen shoulder, impingement
  • Wrist problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, ganglion cysts
  • Loose bone or cartilage fragments
  • Joint inflammation

How to Prepare for Arthroscopy

While specific instructions may vary depending on the joint being treated, here are the general tips to prepare for your arthroscopy procedure.

  • Allergies: Inform your provider about any allergies you have, especially to medications or anesthesia.
  • Medications: Provide a complete list of all medications and supplements you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal remedies. This helps your doctor assess any potential interactions with anesthesia or other medications used during the procedure.
  • Blood thinners & NSAIDs: Discuss any blood-thinning medications or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) you take regularly. You may need to stop these medications before the procedure.
  • Fasting instructions: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the day preceding the procedure. This includes water, to ensure your stomach is empty for anesthesia.
